Multi-Story Buildings & Measurement Basis

  • Total Wall Height Basis: Measure from the foundation sill plate directly to the upper roof soffit/eave line.
  • Per-Story Basis: If measuring single-story wall height (e.g. 9 ft per floor), multiply by the number of above-grade stories (9 ft × 2 stories = 18 ft total wall height for a 2-story colonial).
  • Worked Example: A single-story ranch home measuring 40 ft long by 30 ft wide with a standard 9 ft wall height:
    • Perimeter = 2 × (40 + 30) = 140 linear ft
    • Gross Rectangular Wall Area = 140 × 9 = 1,260 sq ft

Step 2 — Add Gable End Areas (Triangular, Gambrel, & Arched)

On pitched roofs, the triangular or arched wall sections extending above the eave line up to the ridge peak must be sided.

  • Example (continued): The ranch home has 2 standard triangular gable ends, each with a 30 ft base and a 5 ft peak height:
    • Gable Area = 0.5 × 30 × 5 × 2 = 150 sq ft
    • Total Gross Surface Area = 1,260 + 150 = 1,410 sq ft

💡 Note on Hip Roofs: Hip roofs slope downward toward all four exterior walls and do not have gable wall ends. For hip roofs, select "No gables / Flat or Hip roof" (or set Gable Count to 0).


Step 3 — Deduct Openings (Doors, Windows & Garages)

Siding is not installed over windows and doors. Subtract all wall openings to determine the Net Siding Area.
