How to Calculate Square Footage (Formulas by Shape)
Square footage is the standard measurement of two-dimensional surface area used throughout the United States, Canada, and the UK for construction, flooring, painting, real estate appraisal, roofing, landscaping, and tiling. In metric countries, the equivalent metric unit is square meters (m²).
Calculating exact square footage ensures you never overspend on materials or run out mid-job. Below are the geometric formulas for every standard shape:
1. Rectangles and Squares (Most Common Rooms)
For bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, walls, and standard rectangular yards:
Square Footage (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
- Example: A room measuring 15 ft long by 12 ft wide has an area of 15 × 12 = 180 sq ft.
- If measuring in inches: Multiply length by width in inches, then divide by 144 (Length in inches × Width in inches ÷ 144).
2. Circular Areas (Patios, Round Pools, Fire Pits)
For circular patios, round lawns, Gazebos, or tree rings:
Area = π × r² = π × (Diameter ÷ 2)² ≈ 3.14159 × r²
- Perimeter (Circumference): C = π × Diameter
- Example: A circular patio with a 14 ft diameter has a radius of 7 ft. The area is 3.14159 × 7² = 153.94 sq ft.
3. Triangular Areas (Gables, Corner Yards)
For attic gables, triangular yard plots, or diagonal room cutouts:
Area = 0.5 × Base (ft) × Height (ft)
- Example: A triangular wall section with a 16 ft base and 10 ft height equals 0.5 × 16 × 10 = 80 sq ft.
4. Trapezoidal Areas (Non-Parallel Rooms & Driveways)
For driveways that flare out, or rooms with angled walls:
Area = ((Base 1 + Base 2) ÷ 2) × Height
- Example: A driveway with a 16 ft street entrance (Base 1), a 10 ft garage entrance (Base 2), and a length of 20 ft (Height) equals ((16 + 10) ÷ 2) × 20 = 260 sq ft.
5. L-Shaped & Complex Multi-Room Layouts
For open-concept living rooms, L-shaped hallways, or complex floor plans:
- Divide the shape into separate, non-overlapping rectangular sections (Section A and Section B).
- Calculate the square footage of Section A (Length 1 × Width 1).
- Calculate the square footage of Section B (Length 2 × Width 2).
- Add the sections together: Total Area = Area A + Area B.

How to Calculate Boxes of Flooring or Tile Needed
Most flooring and tile products are packaged in boxes containing a fixed square footage (typically 15–25 sq ft per box).
Boxes to Purchase = Ceil(Required Area with Waste ÷ Coverage per Box)
- Example:
- Exact Room Area: 153.94 sq ft
- With 10% Waste: 169.33 sq ft
- Box Coverage: 20 sq ft / box
- Boxes Needed = 169.33 ÷ 20 = 8.47 → 9 boxes
