Step 1 — Determine Total Rise (Most Critical Measurement)
Total Rise is the only site measurement required before any calculation:
Total Rise = Upper Finished Floor Level − Lower Finished Floor Level
Measure from the finished floor surface to the finished floor surface — not subfloor to subfloor. This accounts for flooring materials (hardwood, tile, carpet) on both levels and prevents accumulated riser height error.

Blondel's Ergonomic Rule (1675 AD)
The Blondel Rule balances the step height and depth for natural human gait. For every stride, the leg rises and also moves forward — the ideal balance is:
